Presentation Abstract:

Recent missions to Mars have provided new evidence that early Mars was at least episodically earth-like with rivers, lakes and possibly oceans, and high rates of aqueous weathering and erosion.  Life appears to have arisen early on Earth.  Did some form of life start on Mars when conditions on the two planets were similar?  Conditions on Mars subsequently changed to become much less hospitable but life, if started, may have maintained a tenuous foothold.

 

 

Speaker Biography:

Dr. Michael H. Carr, a planetary geologist at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)   has participated in almost every U.S., Russian and European mission to Mars.  He received a bachelor-of-science degree in geology from the University of London, and received a Ph.D. in geology from Yale University.  

 

In the 1960's he participated in the USGS's lunar geologic mapping program and in a variety of Apollo program activities that included briefing and training astronauts.  Since that time his research has mostly concerned Mars. Carr was a member of the Mariner 9 imaging team and, as leader of the Viking orbiter imaging team, he directed the acquisition of 55,000 pictures of Mars and their subsequent interpretation. He participated in the selection of landing sites for the 1997 Pathfinder mission and the 2004 Spirit and Opportunity rovers, and subsequently in the planning of the Spirit and Opportunity activities on the martian surface.

 

Dr. Carr has authored more than 150 publications, including two books, "The Surface of Mars," and "Water on Mars." Among his many awards are a NASA Medal for Exceptional Scientific Achievement (1977); the Department of Interior Meritorious Service (1979) and Distinguished Service (1988) awards; and the Geological Society of America's G.K. Gilbert award (1993). He was also the 1994 recipient of the National Air and Space Museum's Lifetime Achievement Award in Air and Space Science Technology.

講演予告：

　火星のミッションの最新の証拠資料が提供されていますが、火星の

創世記には少なからず地球に見られるような川、湖、また海洋までも

存在した可能性があり、雨天気候や侵食も高い率であったようです。

　地球では生命の誕生が早かったように現れています。火星で、ある

種の生命が始まったのは、この二つの惑星の条件が同じ状態の時だっ

たのでしょうか。火星の状態はその後も変化を続けて全く住みにくく

なりましたが、もし生命が誕生していたなら、わずかでも足跡を残し

ている筈です。

　マイケル・H・カー博士は、米国地質測量局（USGS）の惑星地質学

者で米国、ロシア、欧州のほとんど総べての火星へのミッションに参

加してきました。ロンドン大学で地質科学士、エール大学で地質学博

士号をとりました。

　米国地質測量局の月の地質測量地図の作成や、アポロ計画の活動で

は月面着陸地点における地質上の眺望と、地球に持って帰るべき歴史

が詳らかな採石の選択について、宇宙飛行士に簡潔な指示と訓練をし

ました。

　カー氏はマリーナ９イメージ・チームのメンバーであり、ヴァイキ

ング軌道イメージの班長として、５５０００の火星の写真の調達とそ

の分析を指図しました。

　又、博士はパスファインダーの火星の１９９７年７月４日の着陸地

点の選定に参加しました。カー博士の１５０以上の発表には、二冊の

著書、「火星の表面」と「火星の水」があります。

 

　博士は数多く受賞し、米国航空宇宙局希少科学達成賞（１９７７）

；内務省奉務勲功賞（１９７９）、殊勲賞（１９８８）；米国地質学

会のGKギルバート賞（１９９３）があります。また博士は航空宇宙

科学技術において１９９４年国立航空宇宙博物館の終身功労賞の受賞

者です。
