SPEAKER: Dr. Ross Beyer
Research Scientist, SETI Institute and NASA/AMES
TOPIC: Google Mars!

This was a fast paced presentation with a lot of great information. For a video of a similar presentation given by Ross at the SETI Institute, click here.
Presentation Abstract:
Google, Inc., has released Google Earth 5.0 which contains a Mars 3D mode. Working with engineers at Google, Ross and others helped collect, parse, and organize the vast store of Mars geospatial data available to the public into a form that could be used by Google Earth. The Mars mode presents data acquired both from orbit and on the surface, presented fully integrated into the Google Earth geospatial browser. Ross will cover a brief history of the project, take you on a detailed tour of all of the features, and answer your questions about using Mars mode for science, education, or fun, as well as answering questions about how to view your own data in the client. The team behind this talk includes NASA Ames engineers Matt Hancher and Michael Broxton.

Speaker Biography:
Ross is currently a Principal Investigator and Research Scientist with the Carl Sagan Center at the SETI Institute. He carries out his research in the Space Science and Astrobiology Division (Planetary Systems Branch, SST) at the NASA Ames Research Center. Ross is also a Research Fellow with the Center for the Origin, Dynamics and Evolution of Planets (CODEP) at UC Santa Cruz.
Ross works on planetary surface studies. He has performed geophysical modeling of diapirism on Mars and other terrestrial planets. He works on ways to quantitatively analyze the meter-scale topography and surface roughness of planetary surfaces via remote sensing. This work has been used to help plan landing sites on Mars. Ross is also working to gain a better understanding of the stratigraphy and layering in the Valles Marineris both in the slopes of the chasmata and the interior mesas in order to learn more about the geologic history of Mars.
