Meetings

The San Mateo County Astronomical Society holds a general meeting the first Friday of each month, except July and August, at 7:30 p.m. in the Integrated Science Center (ISC) room next to the Planetarium at the College of San Mateo.

The first part of the meeting lasts 1/2 hour and is held in the ISC. It consists of refreshments, informal discussion and announcements of upcoming astronomical events in the area. Members and non-members alike are encouraged to attend.

At 8:00PM we adjourn to the Planetarium for the formal part of the meeting which includes this month's Guest Speaker. This part of the meeting lasts 1 to 1-1/2 hours.

Weather permitting, we then adjourn to the roof-top CSM Observatory for stargazing.

Our Guest Speakers are professionals working on the leading edges of Astronomy, Cosmology, Planetary Exploration, Astrobiology, Solar Research, Aerospace Engineering and similar disciplines. Our location enables us to engage speakers from institutions like LLL, NASA, SLAC and USGS, from colleges and universities such as Stanford and campuses in the UC, CSU, and community college systems, as well as from labs and programs at Lockheed Martin and other companies.

Our meetings are open to the public and free. Children are welcome although the subjects may be too advanced for some. Details about the subject and the speaker can be found under Scheduled Speakers and also in the current issue of the Event Horizon under Newsletter.

Parking is free in the adjacent well-lighted parking lots, which offers easy access to the Planetarium and Science building (36).
